The vampires

ampires are divided into Arch- vampires and ordinary vampires
known collectively as "The Pack". The Archvampires, usually called "Masters
of the Night"
, belong to an ancient, non-human. They are a family of predators, consisting of no more than a hundred members in the whole world. Their prey is the entire human population. To keep their presence secret over the centuries, the Masters of the Night have divided the Earth into various hunting grounds, each
governed by one of them. They are active when a war breaks out (sometimes they provoke trouble themselves) and in this way they can find a plentiful food supply, hiding the evidence of their existence under cover of carnage and massacres. There are countless wars in the world and in every one at least one Archvampire is involved. Others head criminal societies, secret societies etc… Each Master is very individual, but all of them are supercreatures, look like humans, are very intelligent, charming, arrogant, with powerful positions. The last survivors of their race, they have made a pact of non-aggression between themselves. They respect but usually hate each other, and within the Family there are quarrels and alliances. They also all have different characters and some of them (for example Harlan's father who loved a human woman, or Amber, the beautiful red-haired vampire) even have some positive points. The Masters make a laughing stock of the entire conglomeration of traditional vampire stories - they aren't afraid of garlic, crucifixes or mirrors and can even (with some care) tolerate daylight. It's only their followers, the Pack, who are scorched and destroyed by the sun. The Pack is made up of ordinary vampires, or rather humans who have been changed into the un-dead by the Masters in a special ritual consisting of far more than the legendary bite. If one of our Masters sucks their
victim's blood, the victim dies unless the master chooses to change him into a slave, that is one of the Pack. Uglier, stranger and more mentally unstable than their bosses, the Pack are in effect their Masters' hounds and are dominated by their strong, superhuman personalities. The Masters use them to flush out the prey. The Pack vampires aren't able to grant immortality.

Other enemies
Harlan won't only fight vampires. In the series we meet sorcerers, devils, fallen angels, wizards, necromancers, witches, ghosts, warlords, drug dealers, mercenaries, dictactors, and both human and extra-terrestrial monsters.
