efisto,
Tex's arch-enemy, is a |
powerful and evil magician
(his real name is Steve Dickart). In the beginning he was
little more than an illusionist with modest hypnotic powers, but then he was initiated
into magic arts by
the Tibetan monk Padma,
|

and so he became a master of the art of magic.
Obsessed by Tex, he has formed an
alliance with the Hualpai Indians and with followers of voodoo, and he also kidnapped
Tex's son Kit and Carson as well, but Tex has always managed to defeat him. Mefisto
died amid the ruins of a castle, but not before transmitting his powers to his son
Blacky, who, assuming the name Yama, seeks
|
|
to avenge his father by killing
Tex and Tex's pards.
But Yama doesn't have the same charisma as Mefisto: he's only a pale copy of
his father and Tex has no difficulty in thwarting his plans.
Proteus (whose real name is Perry

Drayton) is the king of disguises,
intelligent and cunning, and he knows how to turn himself into absolutely
anybody's double. He's carried out perfect armed robberies, and it is only by
a stroke of luck that Tex manages to capture him. El
Muerto (alias Paco Ordoņez) hates Tex because Tex |
|
killed his brothers (two armed robbers);
El Muerto has a disfigured face (hence his nickname, which means "dead man" in Spanish)
and he never fails to hit the mark with his pistol. Tigre Nera is a prince from

Sumankan, who lost all his wealth
because of white men and so he came to the United States to fight whites,
helped by Chinese, blacks and corrupt whites. Cunning and ruthless, he's
one of Tex's greatest enemies. Andrew Liddell, known as The
Master, is a scientist who discovers a poisonous serum and threatens
to pour it in the |
San Francisco water mains unless he's paid a million dollars.
Defeated by Tex and closed up in
a mental hospital, he then manages to escape and
comes back to fight once more, this time in New Orleans, but Tex frustrates his designs
again. The Master is a "mad doctor"
who is far more interested in getting rich than dominating the world. Tex has also
had to contend with secret sects, monstrous creatures and voodoo devotees. But his
main enemies are the classic bad guys of popular imagination of the West:
war-mongering officers, Indians in revolt, outlaws, gun-runners and bootleggers,
corrupt politicians and evil landowners.
